Sarah Hopkins

Sarah Hopkins is a Welsh based artist known for her printmaking, and has exhibited across the UK. Her style is distinctive with the use of bold lines and colour, which she uses to depict the area surrounding Swansea.

( "Mumbles Pier" Ⓒ Sarah Hopkins )

This piece is from Sarah's current work and, as the title suggests, it depicts Mumbles Pier. You can see the pier going across the piece in a slight diagonal, echoed by its shadow, which adds depth to the piece. There are indistinct shapes portraying people fishing off the top of the pier. The predominant colours are blue, grey and black, with splashes of orange and pink. The orange in particular is adding a contrast to the piece, being the complimentary of blue, which is the main colour. The colours are quite calming, but you get a sense of movement with the shapes created within the sea.

What do you think of this piece? Do you like the use of line and colour? Do you think the perspective of the pier used best captures it? Would you do anything differently? Why do you think this?
